Film Title - Focus Group
In order to help me decide which film was best, I created an online focus group on the facebook page for the popular film criticism site, The Dissolve.
First I asked them which name they liked the best and put those results into a spreadsheet. These were the results.
Then, I asked people for their first impressions of each title. I have summarised their responses here.
The network – The main note here was that The Network doesn’t sound sisnister enough. People said they wouldn’t know by looking at the title that it was a psychological thriller.
Unsocial media – “Sounds like something my Dad would say to get me off facebook”. Felt too jokey and not scary.
Unsocial – Many felt the simplicity of this title made it the best, especially with the modern convention of one word horror titles (insidious, sinister etc.)
Social stalker – People liked this one because it was clear, but some thought it was not nuanced enough.
The dark web – Many said they liked this name but that they didn’t vote for it as there was already a film called Dark Web.
Dark web – See above.
Follow Me – The winner of the poll, people liked that it could be read as both a reference to the social media act, and as a sinister implication that someone was being stalked. However, some said we would need to combine it with the right font choice in order to achieve the intended effect.
Followers – Many liked this one, but some felt it sounded more like a sci-fi film or a film about religion than a psychological thriller.
I decided on the name Follow Me as it invoked both the fear of being stalked and the relationship to Social Media. However, I will need to make sure the font choice is perfect in order to create a sense of dread.
