Chosing a font - my font options
With this in mind, I chose five potential fonts for my film.
1: Sugar Death 2
I chose this font because it was handwritten and looked to be drawn by a disturbed individual, and I used the gradient red to black because it gave the impression of movement while reading the font, which related to stalking.
2: HVD PEACE
I chose this font because it was distorted and partially missing, the way I had seen in lots of other fonts for psychological thrillers, and the way the text looked stamped was reminiscent of the way that social media seems to be very in-your-face and at the forefront of youth culture.
3: Orator Std
I chose this font because it was simple and clean, but still had a thin and sinister look to it. I also liked the way the character spacing gave it an airy distant quality, the same quality I had heard so often in the augmented chords of the music used in psychological thrillers. I gave the font a slight red shadow to further hint at danger.
4: VTKS Distress
I chose this font because it combined the things I had liked about both the Sugar Death 2 and HVD Peace fonts. It is distorted and broken to reflect a fractured psyche but it is also bold and in-your-face the way social media follow buttons tend to be. I once again added the red tinge to the outline to bring home the sense of danger.
5: Tahoma
Unlike the others, I chose this font because it specifically replicates the look and colour scheme of Instagram's "follow" button, an image very familiar to social media users. This font is not distorted or broken, but I still felt that in combination with the other images likely to be on the poster it could still evoke threat, and that it highlighted the themes of social media in a way that was very recognisable to Instagram users.
Next I will create a focus group to help me decide which font to use.
