Character types - Psychological Thriller

An obvious way to distinguish a genre is through character types, this is a very defining feature of the psychological thriller genre as it holds very conventional character types that are often repeated from film to film

• The false hero - 

This is a typical device used in this particular genre where someone is initially perceived as good but turns out to be the complete opposite. This could be someone who is trusted by the hero, or even the main hero themselves, therefore we as an audience are undoubtedly invested in this character, hence this role is inevitably inverted to throw off the audience due to broken trust and disorientation.
